Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and the  way we read images and picures in an attempt to decode them and make sense of what they mean to us.
Denotation- What we see when we look at an image (what it is)
Connotation- What we understand from this image (what there meanings it has)






Denotations:
-The poster promotes the new Hunger Games film.
-The film is released on the 23rd of March.
-The main characters Peta and Katniss are on the banners either side of the poster.
-Their faces look determined
-The title of the film is in gold bold letters.
-Katniss is facing away from the audience so her face s hidden.
-The audience are facing towards Katniss as if they are watching her. This links to the small print at the top of the page stating 'the world will be watching'.
-The symbol for Katniss is displayed very big in the centre of the page, Katniss and Peta are facing towards it.
Connotations:
-All the characters are facing towards the symbol in the centre indicating it is important.
-Peta and Katniss are facing each other as if they are opponents.
-Katniss and Peta look slightly beaten and bruised as if they have been defeated.
-Katniss is centre stage indicating she may be more of a main character than Peta.
- Compared to the rest of the poster Peta and Katniss are wearing all black and look less polished as if they don't belong there.
-There are 4 pictures of both characters highlighting that there is no escaping the fact that the world will be watching them.
